Everybody knows what the Gondola is, and when you think of Venice you immediately think of it, but have you ever asked yourself what the comb on the bow represents?
The six teeth represent the Sestieri (the six zones of Venice) and the small bar turned inside represents the Giudecca. The top is the Doge’s hat, the small arc represents the Rialto bridge and all form an ‘S’ which is the Grand Canal.
So… nothing is random!
Now you could ask yourself ‘what is the utility of this comb? Is it only a symbol?’
Well, it is a good question and the answer is that it isn’t only a symbol : it is very important to balance the boat at the stern.
