Regatta has been the favorite subject for many painters when they wanted to depict a festive Venice. Since the birth of Venice, Venetians started to organize boat races, which were later transformed into organized regattas.
Nowadays, remembering this ancient tradition, every year an historic regatta is organized the first Sunday of September.
The Historic Regatta recalls the welcome reserved to Caterina Cornaro in 1489, when, after marrying the king of Cyprus, she refused the throne in favour of Venice.
Even today, dozens and dozens of historic boats parade to show the glorious past of one of the most powerful republics in the whole Mediterranean.
